• Summary:

Ioana-Măriuca Ilie did her Ph.D. in Computational Biophysics at the University of Twente in the Netherlands under the supervision of Prof. Wim Briels. Her research focused on developing coarse-grained models to simulate protein aggregation on realistic timescales (Selected publications on: coarse-grained models of alpha-synuclein and the theoretical framework to determine the monomer attachment free energies extracted from single fragments to a fibril). She joined the Caflisch group in May 2017 as a postdoctoral researcher to explore the structural rearrangements during amyloid-β fibril elongation, the molecular process associated with the toxic species found in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

Her research interests focus on protein aggregation mechanisms in neurodegenerative disorders, on protein folding, and on soft matter in general. In her free time she loves to travel, play volleyball and dance.
